Our National Electrical Code® Program is designed with job-readiness in mind. Study the electrical skills you need while preparing for any required industry certifications or state licenses, so you can get started with a new role or advance your career. It's important to note, however, that completion of a certificate-level program alone may not qualify you for employment as an electrician. Earning your NEC certificate can help refresh your current skills or supplement current education and work experience.

State Licensing Requirements

Licensing and/or certification requirements for jobs in this field are not the same in every state and may include educational, testing, and/or experiential requirements beyond those offered in the Penn Foster Program. Prospective students should contact the state professional licensing board or similar regulatory body in the state(s) where they plan to work to determine their requirements before enrolling in this program. See the State Licensing page for contact information for state licensing/regulatory boards and certain industry licensing information.

NEC Certificate FAQs

What is a NEC certificate?

The NEC, or National Electrical Code, is a standard for the use and installation of electrical components. The NEC covers the installation and removal of electrical conductors, equipment, and raceways installed in our homes and businesses. It is considered a regional standard for safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in the United States.

Why learn NEC?

It's important to learn NEC because it is considered a national standard, establishing a basic level for all electrical safety. This means that some version of the standards have been accepted in multiple states, making it law to adhere to this specific code. You can find which states enforce the NEC here.

What digital textbooks will I receive in this course?

For this course, you will use the Electrical Systems Based on the NEC eBook, as well as the online resource: National Electrical Code.

Who enforces the National Electrical Code?

Even though it is termed as a national code, the NEC is not a federal law. It is enforced by states and municipalities that have adopted it as their own standard.
