Now that you have decided to become an adult learner who takes online courses with Penn Foster, you will want to do everything you can to succeed. One step that can facilitate your success is to find a space where you can concentrate and focus on your schoolwork. This space will look different for each student, so here are a few tips for setting up a study spot that works for you.
Consider your local library
For some, the library offers a great spot to study – it’s quiet, contains plenty of resources, and eliminates many distractions. However, the library can be unpredictable. One day you might find that it’s the perfect workspace, the next you might be stuck sitting next to someone talking loudly on a cell phone, or a child causing a commotion. If you tend to find courteous patrons at your library, look no further for a great study space.
Even better: A private space in your home
Creating a study spot in your own home puts you in control. You can make it clear to your spouse or roommate that this space is designed to be quiet and free of distractions. Plus, you can personalize the room and ensure that it’s comfortable and functional – freedoms you don’t always have in a public space.
Now, a few words about ergonomics
Ergonomics is a science concerned with how physical stressors can cause damage to the body. Sitting at a computer for hours at a time can cause damage to your joints, muscles, nerves, tendons, bones, and eyes. You can avoid these problems by arranging your learning space to meet your personal specifications.
Start with a chair that will help you maintain an upright position, and position your computer monitor so that you don’t have to tilt your head to see properly. Next, consider purchasing a wrist rest for when you use your keyboard and mouse, as wrist injuries are among the most common ailments experienced by computer users. Finally, determine the items you reach for the most – perhaps a stapler, pen, etc. – and try to keep them within arm’s reach at all times, negating the need to bend or stretch to retrieve them.
Last step: Add some personality
Take some time to add a little flair to your workspace. For example, set out a few of your favorite plants to add color to the area. Hang interesting pictures on the walls or incorporate any other personal touches that can make taking online courses as pleasurable and stress-free as possible.
